  1. Acorn have told developers that they no longer want them to support
  2. RISC-OS 2. Previously RO2 support was not required, but many did. In
  3. future they want developers not to support RO2 at all. Acorn have, in
  4. fact, declared RO2 officially 'dead'.

  6. The reason is that we now have two new operating systems RO3.5 (the
  7. 'old' RPC) and RO3.6 (the RPC 700 and 7000). These are more-or-less
  8. developments of RO3.1, and programs which don't take shortcuts should
  9. work on any of them (if they don't use any special features of the RPC).
  10. Trying to support RO2 as well would not only be difficult, it would
  11. severely limit what the program could do as many features of RO3+ are
  12. not easily duplicated on RO2.

  14. Most people realised this would happen eventually, but if you have just
  15. bought a secondhand A3000 you won't be too keen to spend about £90 on a
  16. full price RO3 upgrade. Developers like APDL have been nagging Acorn
  17. about this, and as a result we are now permitted us to buy the RO3.1
  18. ROMs and sell them.

  20. The price for a set of ROMs from APDL is £29 including postage. There is
  21. no extra carriage for this anywhere in the world, (but do not deduct VAT
  22. outside the EC as this covers the extra costs).

  24. The manuals (the User Guide and Apps Guide) are not included in this
  25. price, not surprising as the price of the these alone is £22. If you are
  26. prepared to manage without them your upgrade will cost you only £29, if
  27. you want the entire package it will cost £29 + £22 + £4 carriage (the
  28. Manual is heavy!), which totals £55 - still a bargain

  30.    I will not normally supply the manual only without the ROMs

  32. IMPORTANT - Because of the weight of the manual I have to charge an
  33. extra £3 postage for Europe (total £58) and £8 elsewhere (total £63).
  34. This is quite a bit extra, but it only applies to the manual, NOT the
  35. ROMs. You should be able to get the manual through a local dealer, even
  36. if he can't get the ROMs. Unlike other heavy items, eg. hard discs, you
  37. can't deduct VAT outside the EC because there is no VAT on books.

  39. If you still have RO2 DON'T DELAY. I don't know how long this offer will
  40. continue, and if you miss this chance you could find that your old A3000
  41. is eventually worth next to nothing.

  44.         A310/A440 adaptor board

  46.  The A305/310 and the early A440 machines cannot accept the RO3 ROMs
  47. directly but adaptor boards are available. So many people have asked
  48. that I have arranged to supply the IFEL board for only £22.50 (normal
  49. price £18 + carriage + VAT). This price applies ONLY if you buy the ROMs
  50. with the adaptor, which makes the total price (without Manuals) £51.50
